WICHITA — Hays High’s bid for a upset in Class 5A bracket play was derailed in the fourth quarter, with the No. 11-seeded Indians falling 48-28 on Friday at No. 6-seeded Wichita-Kapaun after being outscored 21-0 in the final frame.
Hays led 28-27 at the end of the third but Kapaun took the lead for good after a touchdown pass on fourth down. Hays High was then forced to punt and Kapuan scored again before recovering a fumble to seal it.
Palmer Hutchison completed 14 of 37 passes for 128 yards and had a touchdown, but had three interceptions as the Indians turned it over four times. Hutchison also led the run game with 17 carries for 97 yards and a score. Hayden Brown had 16 touches for 78 yards and a score.
Brown also was on the receiving end of four Hutchison passes for 71 yards and a score.
Kapaun advances to face Great Bend on Friday in Great Bend.
The Indians finished 3-6 season in their first year under Tony Crough.
