MARSHALL, Minn. — The Fort Hays State men’s basketball couldn’t contain a hot-shooting Sioux Falls team in its season opener, taking an 89-70 loss on Friday in the MIAA-NSIC Challenge.
The Cougars shot 59 percent from the field and buried 12 3-pointers. They opened up a 21-point lead by halftime and led by as much as 28 in the second half.
Drew Guebert burned the Tigers for 33 points on 12-of-18 shooting, while Justin Taylor and Trevor Evans added 16 and 15, respectively.
The Tigers’ last lead was 16-15 at the 14:18 mark of the first half. A Marcus Cooper 3-pointer pulled Fort Hays within six with 8:25 left in the half before Sioux Falls closed the half on a 17-2 run. FHSU never got closer then 17 points after halftime.
Aaron Nicholson and Jared Vitztum shared team-high honors with 11 points each while Cooper added 10.
The Tigers will play No. 20-ranked Southwest Minnesota State at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
