A man was arrested Wednesday night after allegedly attempting to break into a house in southwest Hays and threatening a person with a knife.

Phillip Lawrence Waymack, 36, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, vehicle burglary and attempted aggravated burglary.

Ellis County dispatch received a report at 7:59 p.m. Wednesday of a man with a knife breaking into a home in the 200 block of West Sixth, Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said Thursday morning.

“While we were en route, he was approached by a person living in the area, and the guy threatened that person with the knife,” Scheibler said.

“As the officers arrived on scene, the suspect fled the area, and ran west down the alley,” he said.

A Fort Hays State University officer stopped the suspect at the alley near Sixth and Walnut.
