A new Hays USD 489 Board of Education member could be selected when the board meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Toepfer Board Room in Rockwell Administration Center, 323 W. 12th.
Seven candidates -- Jerold Braun, Miranda Fox, Patrick Scott, Kris Munsch, Sarah Rankin, Luke Oborny and Paul Adams -- have applied to fill the seat vacated by Darren Schumacher.
Schumacher, whose term ends June 30, 2015, had served on the board since July 2007. He resigned when he relocated for his job.
Each of the candidates will have the opportunity to give a brief introduction. Then they will be asked to step out of the room while each is asked questions by the board.
Afterwards, board members can nominate candidates and vote on the nominations.
Discussion of the candidates will take place in open session, board attorney Bill Jeter said at last week's work session.
The candidate selected will take a seat at the board table for the rest of the meeting.
The board also will be asked to approve contract non-renewal resolutions for 16 teachers as part of an effort to make up a $1.3 million shortfall next year.
The staff cuts are expected to add $973,000 to the budget.
Other items on the agenda include:
* An update from Superintendent Dean Katt on student transportation options. The board has discussed cutting routes and charging fees.
* Information on the USDA smart snacks in schools rule and district wellness update by Jessica Calhoun, nutrition services director.
* Consideration of a policy revision in student activity fund management.
