The characters in the Hays Community Theatre upcoming production "Into the Woods" might be familiar.
It features the Brothers Grimm fairy tale characters, but goes beyond the children's version, said director Travis Grizzell.
The audience "finds out a little more about them and how they deal with wishes and quests."
Grizzell, who directs Thomas More Prep-Marian High School plays and musicals, is a member of the community theater's board of directors and performed in productions, but this is his first shot at directing.
"It's a different group and venue," he said.
There are 24 cast members, and about that many working behind the scenes.
"It's really cool to see that many people" interested in community theater, Grizzell said.
Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics and music for "Into the Woods."
"It's very musical, and it's hard music. There's lot of music,' Grizzell said.
Usually there's dialogue between the songs but in this musical, "the music advances the plot."
There will be three performances, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Fox Pavilion.
"We've done dinner shows there, but never a musical," he said. "We love the Fox; we've just never put on a musical."
Grizzell said it was a challenge setting up for the musical, but fun as well.
Performances start at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m., and there will be a social hour from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the audience will get to interact with cast members in character.
Tickets for all seats are $10.
