Helping set the Christmas dinner table
By MATTHEW KENWRIGHT
The fifth annual Hays Christmas Community Dinner seeks volunteers and donations for the program.
The Dec. 25 dinner at 12:30 p.m. will be at the Hays VFW, 22nd and Vine. Last year, 375 people attended, and 450 people are expected this year.
Brittany Lang, the dinner's coordinator, said volunteers are needed to greet diners, seat them, work on the food line, serve drinks, provide desserts and deliver food to homes that request a meal. The dinner is only funded by donations.
"The dinner wouldn't be possible without everyone helping," Lang said.
The men at the VFW prepare the meal on Christmas and stay afterwards to clean. Turkey, roast beef, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, salad, rolls, stuffing and various desserts will be served.
The dinner is about celebrating fellowship on a holy day, Lang said.
"The vision for the Christmas dinner is celebrating the true reason of Christmas," she said. "I think sometimes we can become distracted by the busyness of the holidays, and this just reverts us to the true reason, and that's celebrating Christ."
Those who wish to volunteer or donate to the program can call Lang at (785) 259-3766 or email her at email@example.com. Checks can be made to Hays Community Christmas Dinner.
