Hansen foundation offering more scholarships

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation scholarship stipends have increased significantly for the 2014-15 academic year.

A total of 280 scholarships in five categories will be available to students from an accredited high school, registered independent, private or home school in 26 Kansas counties.

Area counties include Ellis, Cheyenne, Decatur, Gove, Graham, Logan, Norton, Osborne, Phillips, Rawlins, Rooks, Russell, Sheridan, Sherman, Smith, Thomas, Trego and Wallace.

Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship stipends will increase to $10,000 from $6,500 renewable for three additional years if criteria is met. Ten might be awarded.

Hansen Scholar Scholarship stipends will increase to $6,500 from $4,000, renewable for one additional year providing recipients have achieved at least a 3.0 grade-point average. A total of 50 might be awarded.

Hansen Student Scholarship stipends will increase to $4,000 from $3,000, renewable for one additional year providing recipients have achieved at least a 3.0 grade-point average. A total of 100 might be awarded.

Recipients must attend an accredited four year public, private or church related Kansas college or university.

To qualify for the scholarships, a student must have taken the ACT and have a composite score of 21 or higher and have at least a 3.5 GPA. The student also should be active in extracurricular school and community activities, display good citizenship, leadership and moral integrity.

To enter the competition, a student must register at their school and take the qualifying test at locations to be announced. Test dates have been set for Sept. 10 and 11.

Hansen Career and Technical Education Scholarship stipends will increase to $4,000 from $2,000, and be renewable for one additional year providing recipients have achieved at least a 3.0 grade-point average. A total of 100 may be awarded.

Community or Technical College Transfer Scholarship stipends will increase to $4,000 from $3,000. Twenty might be awarded.
