WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., spoke on the Senate floor Wednesday to honor Sgt. Patrick Hawkins, 25, who was among four members of the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment killed in action Sunday in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Moran said during his speech that the parents of Hawkins' wife, Brittanie, are Hays, Kan., residents. Sgt. Hawkins was from Carlisle, Pa.
According to an email from his office, on Tuesday Moran joined a bipartisan group of his colleagues in sending a letter to U.S. Department of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, urging him to provide immediate death gratuity payments to military families during the government shutdown.
