Schwaller, the grandfather of Hays City Commissioner Henry Schwaller IV, is best known for his vision of Hays' future, developing land east of Vine Street.

"He is the most optimistic and forward-thinking man I have ever met," Schwaller IV told The Hays Daily News in a 1998 article highlighting the family's lumberyard business.

Schwaller II believed the city of Hays would grow east, rather than west -- a prediction that came to fruition as expansion east of Vine exploded in the 1960s. He also was a longtime member of the Hays City Commission.

Cline's Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd, is in charge of arrangements.
