Three executive sessions totaling more than two hours resulted in a five-hour Hays USD 489 Board of Education meeting Monday night at Rockwell Administration Center.
Board president Greg Schwartz moved the board enter an hour long executive session at 9:10 p.m. to include the board, attorney Bill Jeter, board consultant Randy Gustafson, board clerk Cheryl Shubert, Assistant Superintendent for Special Services Mark Hauptman, nutrition director Jessica Calhoun, operations technology coordinator Todd Bryant, Elizabeth Jaeger, assistant to the superintendent, Learning Center director Anita Scheve and Superintendent Will Roth.
Also mentioned were building administrators Marty Straub, Tom Albers, Craig Pallister, Shanna Dinkel, Elaine Rohleder, Tom Meagher, Lee Keffer, Allen Park and Nancy Harman.
Schwartz said those individuals would be included "at some or all of the executive session."
The reason given for the executive session was non-elected personnel and attorney-client privilege.
The same group was included and the same reason given for the following 45-minute session and final 30-minute executive session.
After moving to open session following the final executive session at 11:25 p.m., Schwartz said the board wanted to cover three items before adjourning.
The first is to "move forward filling the interim superintendent position." Interviews with in-house and out-of-house candidates who have expressed interest in the position will be set up as soon as possible.
A discussion of search firms and options recommended by the district and the Kansas Association of School Boards will be placed on the agenda for the second meeting in August, so the board can move forward in selecting a firm to help select a new superintendent.
Finally, Deputy Superintendent Richard Cain, who also has served as assistant superintendent of finance, is retiring Sept. 1. The board will ask a representative from Adams, Brown, Beran and Ball and Brungardt, Hower, Ward, Elliott and Pfeifer to attend the July 31 work session to discuss options and costs to provide assistance with district finances until Cain's replacement is hired.
In other business, the board:
* Accepted resignations from Dennis Hahn, O'Loughlin technology assistant; and Katherine Johansen, Hays High dance team sponsor.
* Approved a revised notice of retirement from Superintendent Will Roth, effective Oct. 1, 2013, and notice of retirement from Deputy Superintendent Richard Cain, effective Sept. 1, 2013.
* Approved conditional employment of Cynthia Compeau, Roosevelt librarian; Carlyn Jorgensen, Hays High dance sponsor; and Daniel Heier, Roosevelt custodian.
