In times past, there seems to have been a stigma attached to a person who sought outside professional counseling. Thankfully, in our society, that stigma has, for the most part, disappeared.

There is no norm that says a person should be able to handle alone any hardship or challenge that life deals to us at times. Or, remember the old military saying that went: "When the going gets tough, the tough get going."

This is simply not true. One of the services offered by the Catholic Charities office in Hays is professional therapy from licensed clinical professional counselors that help people work through issues ranging from depression to relationship counseling. Marriage, family and individual counseling of all types can result in inner peace, as well as outer reconciliation.

One of the guiding policies of Catholic Charities is services are not denied to anyone because of finances. A sliding fee scale and third-party reimbursement (insurance) are available for reaching that goal.

At Catholic Charities, we do not offer just counseling services. We also provide adoption services for northwest Kansas. We work with prospective adoptive parents, helping them along their journey of welcoming a child into their life. We also work with pregnant women through a program called Pregnancy Maintenance Initiative. Women who find themselves with an unplanned pregnancy can seek our services to help them through this. We offer crisis pregnancy counseling, and information regarding adoption and parenting.

We can at times, help provide needed items such as cribs, diapers and formula. The goal of the PMI program is for the mother to give birth to a healthy baby, whether she decides to place the baby for adoption or parent the child. There is no cost for the PMI program.

The Kansas Loan Pool Project is a program offered by Catholic Charities. This is a collaborative loan program between Sunflower Bank and Citizen's National Bank funded by grants from Catholic Campaign for Human Development and United Methodist Health Ministry Fund to alleviate high-interest payday and title loan debt by offering legitimate loans at a fair interest rate to pay off predatory lenders. Contact Catholic Charities in Salina for more information.

Catholic Charities is Board of Immigration Appeals accredited to provide legal immigration services. The program helps people of low to medium resources apply for immigration status and assists those who are having difficulties with their U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services cases. For information in English or Spanish, call (785) 827-4571.

All services are available to anyone regardless of race, ethnicity or religious preference.

To set an appointment or to find out more about programs, call the office at (785) 625-2644, (877) 625-2644, or stop by our office in the Northridge Plaza in Hays.

There is no shame in asking for a "hand up."
