Bids exceed county's estimate for EMS, fire building

Bids were opened at Wednesday afternoon's public bid meeting for contractors for construction of the new Ellis County EMS/rural fire building.
Six contractors submitted bids at the meeting at the site of the new administrative building at 718 Main. None of the bids met the county's estimated cost for the building, $3.8 million.
Paul-Wertenberger Construction of Hays submitted the lowest base bid, $3,948,000. The Law Co., Wichita, had a base bid of $4,117,000. Compton Construction, Wichita, had a base bid of $4,226,900, and Commercial Builders of Hays had a base bid of $4,288,000. Harbin Construction, Salina, had a base bid of $4,438,000, and the base bid for Conco Construction, Wichita, was $4,547,000.
Each contractor also had bids on seven alternates for the project.
The county will announce the winning bid after further evaluation of the contractors' bids.
