USD 489 board hears audit report

Ken Beran and Melissa Romme of Adams, Brown, Beran and Ball, gave the Hays USD 489 district's audit report.

The district is facing a budget shortfall of approximately $200,000, and board members asked the accountants for recommendations to avoid similar situations in the future.

Beran's recommendations included researching to better estimate costs, preparing monthly reports and setting aside contingency funds.

"I'd say get a format to get a monthly report to the board on what you're spending, (and) what your cash balance is," he said.

A contingency fund would cover unexpected expenses such as boilers, buses and roofs.

"We usually say about three months of operation (costs)," Beran said.

The board also voted 5-0 to name Elizabeth Jaeger as clerk of the board. Jaeger is assistant to the superintendent.

Current board clerk Cheryl Shubert will be the deputy board clerk.
