Bubble dash to raise money for children's center

  • ()

Rain or shine, there will be bubbles Saturday.

The Hays Area Children’s Center will debut a fundraiser Saturday at Big Creek Crossing — Splish Splash Bubble Dash, a run/walk with kid-friendly obstacles along the 1.5-mile course.

Nicole Zimmerman, HAC community relations director, said the center staff was brainstorming ideas to raise additional funds for programs and services, which include a preschool, free developmental screenings for infants and toddlers, and early intervention and Healthy Start home visits.

“Our state funding has been cut pretty drastically over the years,” Zimmerman said.

The organization has seen a 22-percent decrease in state and local funding since 2013, according to information from the HAC.

“We wanted to do something for families and pull in the children. All children love bubbles,” she said of the new fundraiser.

Registration will be taken through the morning of the event, Zimmerman said, but those who register now will not be guaranteed a T-shirt since the early registration period has ended.

Zimmerman said she was hoping for 75 registrations. As of Monday afternoon, there were 77, she said.

“For the first year, we are doing very well,” she said.

The course for the Splish Splash Bubble Dash will begin on the east side of Big Creek Crossing, 2918 Vine, and go east to Aubel-Bickle Park. Participants can do a 1.5-mile race, or go around twice for a 5K.

“There will be different bubble stations along the way,” Zimmerman said.

The obstacles include going under or over things so young children will be able to participate, she said.
