Bitter end for downtown candy store
By RANDY GONZALES
The Sweet Tooth Candy Shack, 1012 Main, is closing after opening five months ago in downtown Hays.
The store will be open until 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday before closing its doors for good. All candy is 60 percent off, and store fixtures and arcade games also are for sale. What isn't purchased by Saturday will be auctioned off at a later date, said Jimmy Kimbrel, whose wife, Shannon, opened the Hays store in April.
"She's really upset about it," Jimmy Kimbrel said. "Just no one's coming in. It started good at the beginning, then all of a sudden just ain't making it."
The Kimbrels also opened a candy store in October in Hill City before expanding to Hays, but it closed shortly after the Hays store opened.
"Just not enough business in a little town like Hill City," Jimmy Kimbrel said. "We figured it would be better over at Hays. Maybe it was the location."
With prices slashed, now is the time to stock up on Halloween candy, Jimmy Kimbrel said.
"We got stocks of a lot of stuff," he said.
Jimmy Kimbrel, who has owned a tree service business in Hill City for approximately 25 years, said they now will try to pay off creditors and vendors for the Hays store.
"We really appreciate all of our business. We really appreciate everybody that came in," he said. "Just wasn't enough people coming in."
