An early morning chase that included a block-long drive on a city sidewalk has landed a 19-year-old Hays man in jail on a variety of traffic-related charges.
The driver of the vehicle who ultimately was arrested was identified by Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler as Charles W. Murphy.
Scheibler said the incident started at approximately 4 a.m. Saturday when an officer on patrol spotted a vehicle stopped in the street at the intersection of Seventh and Elm.
As the officer pulled up behind the vehicle, Scheibler said, the driver sped off, heading southbound on Park Street.
But rather than drive through the Fort Hays State University campus, he said the drive turned onto Sixth Street, jumping the curb and driving on the sidewalk in front of the Campus Catholic Center.
The driver then headed southbound on Elm Street, striking a parked car in the 300 block of Elm.
Scheibler said the vehicle continued south on Elm Street and eventually was stopped near the intersection of Main and Elm streets.
No one was injured in the chase, but Murphy was arrested for driving under the influence, attempting to elude a police officer, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident.
