Rural fire crews battle blaze near Hays
By MATTHEW KENWRIGHT
Approximately 25 acres of grassland burned Tuesday afternoon outside of Hays near the intersection of Catherine and Limestone Road.
The Ellis County Rural Fire Department responded to the scene along with the county's Public Works Department and the Ellis County Sheriff's office.
Clearing the scene took three hours for precaution for the homes surrounding the site, said Ellis County Rural Fire Director Dick Klaus.
The cause is undetermined, but the warm weather Monday might be to blame. Tuesday's wind gusts contributed to the fire's spread.
"There was a pit where they threw trash in," Klaus said. "There was a piece of glass that maybe the sun hit right yesterday and started smoldering."
The rocky roads surrounding the scene helped prevent the fire from spreading beyond the grassy area.
