Fire destroys Schoenchen home, injures resident
By The Hays Daily News
SCHOENCHEN -- A Schoenchen resident received minor burns and scrapes Saturday afternoon while trying to put out a large fire at his home.
The resident, classified by neighbors as a loner and whose name they did not know, had to be pulled away from the fire that destroyed his mobile home on the north end of the small Ellis County town of 150.
He was treated by Ellis County EMS, and the Hays chapter of the American Red Cross also was called to the scene.
According to Dale Befort from Rural Fire Co. 5, the home -- located in the 300 block of Church Street -- was a total loss.
Carl Stouffer, next door neighbor to the mobile home, said he saw the resident trying to put out the fire with water buckets from a water tank on the back of his truck because he had no running water in the home. Stouffer called 911 at approximately 2:20 p.m. when he heard an explosion.
"I was yelling at him to get away from the house when I was on the phone with 911," Stouffer said. "Then (residents) lost him in the smoke" but were able to find him and pull him away from the fire.
At least two of several vehicles on the lot also burned in the fire, of which the cause is undetermined.
