At 7:55 p.m. Monday, the Hays Fire Department, supported by the Hays Police Department and Ellis County EMS, was dispatched to a building fire at 409 W. 13th. On arrival, firefighters found a fire burning in a detached two-car garage.

Twenty-four firefighters staffing five fire trucks responded. One hose line was needed to extinguish the fire, but a second was advanced for back-up. The fire was under control by 8:19 p.m.; however, firefighters remained on the scene, extinguishing hot spots for another two hours.

The building sustained moderate damage. The garage contained no vehicles but was being used as a work shop and storage area. The fire probably started on or around a work bench in the garage, but the cause has not been determined.
