Hays Medical Center Foundation recently announced the election of new officers and board members.
The foundation is a charitable organization that supports HaysMed by raising funds for equipment, programming and the growth of services.
The following board members were voted in as officers: Pat Parke, president; Nancy Talbott, vice president; Wayne Kieffer, treasurer; and Jerry Haley, secretary. Those elected to their first three-year term on the Foundation Board of Directors included Tracy Frickey, Hays, executive vice president at SizeWise; Sarah Rankin, Hays, community volunteer; and Julie Rider, Hays, community volunteer. Patrick Scott, Hays, retired educator, was elected as a representative of the HaysMed Volunteers Executive Committee.
"The role of the board is to oversee the administration of the foundation assets and to help be active fundraisers for the foundation," said Ruth Heffel, director of the HaysMed Foundation. "They're not management, but they oversee the broader aspects of the foundation."
Heffel said an important part of being a board member is the ability to actively raise funds.
"They go out into the community to raise money for the capital campaign," she said. "We raised $6.6 million, and (the board) did a lot of calling on businesses or professionals."
The elected board members are nominated by other board members, or self-nominated on rare occasions.
"We like to have people who are well-known in the community," Heffel said. "We want conscientious, organized members who understand the role of the foundation and have the capacity to fundraise."
Board members represent various industries in the community and preferably understand the importance of health care in western Kansas.
"Interesting enough, three of the new board members grew up in Hays," Heffel said. "Two of them moved away and came back. To me, that shows a great commitment to the community."
