Strong student showing at journalism awards
Special to The Hays Daily News
Local and area schools brought home lots of hardware -- including numerous state titles -- from two different types of state contests in the state last weekend.
Three schools receiving top state honors at the Kansas Scholastic Press Association's state competition at Lawrence were from Ellis County.
Hays High School's newspaper, the Guidon, won All-Kansas honors in Class 5A for the fourth time in the past six years. It is one of only three 5A papers to earn the honor.
Thomas More Prep-Marian High School had two individual state champions in the 3A/4A competition in juniors Owen Toepfer and Lexie Wasinger, as did Ellis High School in 1A/2A (senior Brittany Dinkel and junior Sarah Mick).
Hays High and TMP also had students finish in the top three at their respective Speech and Drama State Championships, as HHS senior Rachel Muirhead brought home a runner-up finish from 5A action at Emporia, and senior Becca Channell and sophomore John Drees combined for a third-place team finish in 3A competition in Wichita.
