Bridge comment period extended
The public comment period for demolition of a limestone bridge straddling Russell and Rush counties has been extended, the result of the two-week-long federal government shutdown.
The comment period has been extended until Nov. 16, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Originally, the comment period was set to expire on Halloween.
The triple-arch bridge, the largest in Rush County, is scheduled to be torn down and a new concrete structure built. At least some of the limestone blocks from the bridge, constructed by the Works Progress Administration in 1936, are expected to be salvaged and used at museums in La Crosse.
Additional details and comments can be made to Steven M. Whetzel, at the Corps' Kanopolis field office, 107 Riverside Drive, Marquette, KS 67464, by phone at (816) 389-3098, or via email at email@example.com.
A public hearing on the proposal to demolish the bridge also can be requested prior to the end of the comment period.
