Update: Russell County jail inmate dies Tuesday

RUSSELL — A 63-year-old woman died Tuesday night after being taken into custody at the Russell County jail.

According to a press release from Russell County Sheriff Fred J. Whitman, the woman was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of criminal threat and disorderly conduct and brought to the jail. She was identified in a press release from the sheriff Friday morning as Melody Ann Blake.

At approximately 11:50 p.m., Blake was found unresponsive during a routine check. Additional Russell County officers and emergency medical crews responded to the jail.

Blake was transported by ambulance to Russell Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

An autopsy has been conducted and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been notified. Results of the autopsy are pending, according to the release.
