A Hays man was arrested late Saturday without incident on suspicion of burglary.
The Hays Police Department's Special Situation and Response Team was called to help with the arrest after authorities learned he might be armed and threatening to hurt himself or someone else.
Thomas W. Zimmerman, 54, ultimately was taken into custody without incident, Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said Monday.
The standoff was the culmination of investigation into a series of burglaries at Zimmerman Plumbing.
After receiving information about Zimmerman's alleged involvement in the burglary, HPD also learned he was in a house in the 200 block of 25th Street Terrace and armed with a rifle. That information suggested he might have made "suicidal or homicidal comments."
After setting up a perimeter around the residence, Scheibler said officers tried to make contact with Zimmerman via telephone.
Even though officers could see him moving around inside the house, he said, Zimmerman wouldn't answer the phone.
That's when officers decided to throw a portable phone into the house.
Officers then were able to make contact with him, and he was taken into custody without incident.
Scheibler said Zimmerman was arrested on suspicion of burglary, felony theft, domestic battery and misdemeanor theft. Charges are pending.
