Advocates asked to 'teal up'
April is sexual assault awareness month, and Options is teaming up with the Start by Believing campaign to raise awareness within the community.
Start by Believing is an awareness campaign that focuses on the public response to sexual assault.
“Start by believing refers to start by believing the victim,” said Charlotte Linsner, Options Executive Director. “We decided to take that campaign and do something with it.”
Options is asking the community to “teal up” and show support by wearing teal one day the week of April 20.
Teal is the official color for sexual assault.
“I found the idea back in October,” Linsner said. “I saw something in New York where they had purple everywhere. They even put purple lights on the Empire State building.”
“We wanted to see if we could get people to wear teal that week,” Linsner said.
“The purpose is to show survivors of sexual assault in the community that we don’t accept (sexual assault).”
Linsner encourages businesses to dedicate a day to “teal up” and take a picture with employees wearing teal clothing. The executive team at Options will choose a business to win a plaque.
“The plaque shows you support victims of domestic violence and sexual assault,” Linsner said.
