Ness County to honor veterans
By RANDY GONZALES
NESS CITY -- The National Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day resolution was passed by the U.S Senate in 2011, designating March 30 as a day to honor those veterans.
Veterans from that war since have been honored around the country, both on March 29 and 30.
Vietnam veterans from Ness County will be honored in the inaugural event at 11 a.m. Saturday in Ness City. Vietnam veterans, families, friends and supporters are invited to a hamburger feed at the community building. The cost of the meal for those who are not Vietnam veterans is $5.
Former residents of Ness County who served in Vietnam also are invited to attend.
Lynette Stenzel, and her husband, Loren -- a Vietnam veteran -- are organizing the inaugural event in Ness County. American Legion Riders from Hays are expected to help Saturday.
"It's a project we've taken on," Lynette Stenzel said.
Loren Stenzel served in the Army in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 as a combat engineer. Stenzel, 66, realized it was time to honor the veterans as part of the national remembrance.
"Just decided if we're going to have something, better not wait too long to do that," he said.
It is estimated there are approximately 70 Vietnam veterans in Ness County. The Stenzels would like to see a big turnout Saturday.
"We're hoping for one," Lynette Stenzel said.
