Bernard Arthur "Bernie" Schoenthaler, 88, Ellis, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, in WaKeeney.

He was born Dec. 10, 1923, in Trego County to Frederick and Emma Regina (Deutscher) Schoenthaler.

He married Doris Elizabeth Ball on June 19, 1946. He was a John Deere dealer, a bookkeeper and salesman for O'Loughlin Motor Sales and Fondoble Motor Sales for 18 years. In 1964, he was appointed city clerk of Ellis until his retirement in 1986. During his tenure as city clerk, he represented Ellis' interests in an attempt to build Round Mound Dam on Big Creek. Upon retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling, camping and sailing.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, WaKeeney; a son, Brian Schoenthaler and wife, Sheri, Valley Center; a daughter, Cheryl Robertson and husband, R.J., Little Rock, Ark.; and eight grandchildren, Leslie Robertson, Vail, Colo., Jamie and Ashley Robertson, Denver, Brandon Schoenthaler and wife, Liz, Valley Center; Brenton Schoenthaler and wife, Tara, Wichita, and Braden, Bryson and Brittni Schoenthaler, Valley Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Elvira Dubach; and two brothers, Donald and Raymond Schoenthaler.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church, Ellis; private family inurnment will take place prior to services in Mount Hope Cemetery, Ellis.

Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th, Ellis, KS 67637, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to Ellis Nutrition Center, Eighth and Washington, Ellis, KS 67637.
