Elizabeth Marie Hauenstein Bradford

Elizabeth "Betty" Marie Hauenstein Bradford, 84, Hays, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at Good Samaritan Society, Hays.
She was born Aug. 14, 1928, in Okarche, Okla., to Marie (Rohr) and John Oscar Hauenstein. She attended St. Mary's College of Nursing in Enid, Okla., and graduated as a registered nurse in 1949.
She married Edmund Frederick Bradford on Nov. 16, 1949. He preceded her in death Aug. 20, 2002. She dedicated her life to her family and to her career of nursing. She served as director of nursing at Parkview Hospital in El Reno, Okla., and surgery supervisor at Trinity Hospital in Dodge City. After moving to Hays in 1976, she worked as a supervisor at St. Anthony's Hospital until her retirement. After retirement, she continued her profession of nursing by teaching certified nurse's aide and certified medication aide courses through Barton County Community College. Until the age of 81, she continued her life's work of caring for the sick by doing private-duty nursing for many area residents in their homes.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Bird and husband, John T., Hays; two sons, Dr. Edmund James Bradford and wife, Monica, Silver Spring, Md., and Richard John Bradford and wife, Nancy, Herrin, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, Amy Bird, Hays, John M. Bird and wife, Gipsy, Hays, Patrick Bird, Portland, Ore., Jessica Bird, Garden City, Megan Leis-Gill, Columbia, Mo., Emily Bradford, Chicago, Allison Bradford and Colleen Bradford, Silver Spring, Jaime Bradford, Garden City, Rob Bradford, Maryville, Ill., and Rachel Barrow and husband, Sean, Las Vegas; her great-grandchildren are Samantha Bird Kochanowski, Hays, Cameron and John E. Bird, Hays, Taylor Bird, Dallas, Ava and Olivia Gill, Columbia, and Riley and Eoin Barrow, Las Vegas; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and her adopted sister, Margie Portnier, Stockton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Oscar John and Joe Hauenstein.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, both at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.
A vigil will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, followed by a rosary, both at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Society of Hays in care of the funeral home.
