Brenda Sue Gabel, 52, Hays, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 4, 1962, in Fayetteville, N.C., to Virgel Weigel and Darlene VonFeldt. She was a 1980 graduate of Marian High School.

She married Curtis G. Gabel on Oct. 17, 1981, in Hays.

She previously had worked at several area banks and was working as a loan specialist for Equity Bank of Hays.

She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, where she taught religious education classes. She was a member of the Ladies Guild. She was on the Board of Directors of CASA and a Chamber Ambassador.

Survivors include her husband, of the home; a son, Nicholas Gabel and wife, Jaymi, Hays; two daughters, Ashley Knoll and husband, Michael, Topeka, and Kara Gabel, of the home; a sister, Becky Woodard and husband, Paul, Arlington, Texas; a granddaughter, Reagan Knoll, Topeka; her father, Virgel Weigel and stepmother, Pat, Hays; her mother, Darlene (VonFeldt) Schlesinger, Victoria; two stepbrothers, Doug Hammett and wife, Bev, South Africa, and Ron Hammett and wife, Stacy, Allentown, Pa.; and three stepsisters, Rhonda Larscheid and husband, Don, Kristi Carson and husband, Tim, all of Topeka and Susan Hammett, Hays.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church, and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Brock's Funeral Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

A rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a vigil at 7 p.m., both at the church.

Memorials are suggested to CASA or Kara Gabel Education Fund in care of the funeral home.
