Carol Jean Slingsby, 61, Clay Center, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.

She was born Nov. 24, 1952, in Hays to Fred Jr. and Eunice (Balthazor) Berland. She was raised in Zurich. She was a 1970 graduate of Palco High School and graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1974.

She married Walt Slingsby on June 3, 1977. She was a teacher in Gove and moved to Clay Center in 1977. She was an elementary teacher for USD 379. She stopped teaching to raise her children and had been teaching again since 1992.

She was a member of the S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, serving on the Parish Council and teaching Catechism for many years. She was on the Clay Center Library Board and PTA.

Survivors include her husband, Clay Center; three sons, Shon Slingsby and wife, Haylle, and Patrick Slingsby and fiance, Amy Klausmeyer, all of Wichita, and Adam Slingsby and wife, Alicia, Clay Center; a daughter: Janelle Bergman and husband, Jeff, Topeka; her mother, Plainville; a brother, the Rev. Mark Berland, Oberlin; five sisters, Kay Basgall, Owosso, Mich., Ann Zwink, Peidmont, Okla., Mary Everett, Wilson, Lois Mason, Ellis, and Rebecca Cobb, Peoria, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and an infant sister.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Clay Center; burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home, Clay Center.

A rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Catholic Charities in care of the funeral home.
