Clarence W. Mai, 87, WaKeeney, died Monday, March 31, 2014, at his home in Hays.

He was born April 20, 1926, in rural WaKeeney to William and Amelia (Flagler) Mai.

He married Betty L. (Sparks) Mai on Sept. 1, 1946, in WaKeeney. He was a lifelong WaKeeney resident, only recently moving to Hays. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Bob Mai, Scranton; two daughters, Loni Reece, Topeka, and Kathleen Basinger, Hays; a brother, Howard Mai, Denver; a sister, Edith Mabry, Yakima, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, David.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, WaKeeney; burial in Kansas Veterans Cemetery, with military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney.

Memorials are suggested to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, WaKeeney, or Honor Flight Inc. in care of the funeral home.
