Clifford V. 'Cliff' Engel

Clifford V. "Cliff" Engel, 61, Hays, died Monday, June 17, 2013, at his home.
He was born March 17, 1952, in Hays to Victor F. and Viola (Dougherty) Engel. He was a 1970 graduate of Hays High School.
He married Mary Lang on Aug. 15, 1983, in Hays. He was a custodian for Hays USD 489 at O'Loughlin and Roosevelt Elementary schools. He worked at The Hays Daily News and at Hays Bowl. He and his wife owned and operated Ellis Lanes for a few years.
He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
He played trombone and was a backup singer for the Tempests, a Hays band from the 1960s. His band was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame at Lawrence in March. He enjoyed playing music, carpentry work, his family and his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Joshua Kehn and fiancÃ©, Ashley Lewis, and Trevor J. Engel and fiancÃ©, Susie Obholz, all of Hays; a daughter, Jenny Spear and husband, Michael, Seattle; his mother, Oakley; two brothers, Steve Engel and wife, Robin, and Dennis Engel and wife, Carol, all of Hays; two sisters, Alice Robben, Oakley, and Lois Augustine and husband, Ralph, Hays; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Vitus and Gladys Brungardt, Hays; two grandchildren, Brandon Spear and Breadon Cunningham; and one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother-in-law, Larry Robben.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays; inurnment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday, both at Cline's Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd, Hays, KS 67601.
A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the Engel family to be decided at a later date in care of the mortuary.
