Donald E. ‘Don’ McGinnis

He was born July 2, 1931, in Esbon to Ivan and Frances (Lorence) McGinnis. He received a master’s degree from Fort Hays State University in industrial arts.
He married LaVon Schumacher on Sept. 1, 1958, in Hays. He was a truck driver for Arrow Trucking and a salesman for Schumacher Shoe Store. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving at the end of the Korean War.
He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and St. Nicholas of Myra Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 10044.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; three sons, Chuck McGinnis, Hays, Mike McGinnis and wife, Carol, Vista, Calif., and Tony McGinnis and partner, Regina Steenbock, Carlsbad, Calif.; four daughters, Pat Hammerschmidt and husband, Bob, Hays, Myrna McGinnis and partner, Loretta Fletche, Wichita, Kathy McGinnis and partner, J.J. Legleiter, Hays, and Barb Herrman and husband, Troy, Hutchinson; a brother, Darrell McGinnis and wife, Grace, Hays; a sister, Connie Dodd, College Station, Texas; seven grandchildren, Ryan Hammerschmidt, Hays, Blake, Shayde and Tobyn McGinnis, all of Hays, Allie Nicholson, Manhattan, Kirstin Benedict, Hutchinson, and Brandon Herrman, Hutchinson; and a great-grandson, Kain Nicholson, Manhattan.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry McGinnis.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, with military honors by the Hays Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9076.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Friday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.
A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, followed by a combined Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m., all at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.
