She was born Oct. 22, 1923, in El Dorado to John and Marie Hegdal. She was a 1941 graduate of El Dorado High School and attended El Dorado Junior College.

While attending El Dorado Junior College, she was recruited by Curtis Wright Aeronautical Engineering and sent to Purdue University as an engineering cadet in 1943. She then was sent to Hickam Field Hawaii in their engineering department. She married Richard Beach on April 2, 1947. After living in Denver, Cheyene, Wyo., Ponca City, Okla., and Chicago, she and family moved to Houston in 1954. Following moves to Fort Worth and Tehran, Iran, the family returned to Houston in Clear Lake, Texas.

In retirement, they sailed to Florida for several years, then moved to Hays to care for her husband's mother until her passing. In 1999, they moved to Georgetown, Texas, and lived in Sun City. They continued traveling the U.S from coast to coast in a recreational vehicle Dorothy especially enjoyed.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years; two sons, Chris and wife, Siti, Houston, and Doug and wife, Barbie, San Antonio; a daughter, Alison Barker and husband, Steve, San Antonio; and six great-grandchildren.
