Edith Pauline Smith, 90, Hays, died Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Hays Good Samaritan Society.

She was born Nov. 27, 1922, in Burdett to Walter James and Bessie Edith (Delp) Hendershot. She attended grade school in Burdett and was a 1940 graduate of Burdett High School. She received her bachelor of science degree in home economics with a secondary teacher's certification in the spring of 1961 from Fort Hays State College.

She married Robert D. Smith on Sept. 14, 1941, in Burdett. He preceded her in death May 17, 2002. She taught home economics in the Hays school district from 1966 to 1983.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Retired Faculty Wives of FHSU, various bridge groups, Kappa Gamma Chi, Ellis County Retired Teachers, Fort Hays State University Century Club, Kappa Omicron Phi and Frederick A. Browne American Legion.

Survivors include three daughters, Marsha Watkins and husband, Larry, Quinter, Roberta Lynn Smith, Myersville, Md., and H. Jolene Hoover and husband, Don, Hays; eight grandchildren, Sarah Watkins-Mace, Mark Watkins, Richard Smith, Daniel Smith, C. Lane Waltemire, Alisa Caruthers, Traci Boller and Brenna Sherlock; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Dean Smith; an infant daughter, Judith Mae Smith; and a brother, Dale James Hendershot.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, Hays; burial and graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Brown's Grove Cemetery, Burdett.

Friends can call from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine, and from 10 a.m. until time of service Monday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church, Hays, Mary C. Norris Methodist Church, Burdett, or Good Samaritan Society, Hays, in care of the funeral home.
