Ernest J. Hammerschmidt, 77, Plainville, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 11, 1935, in Victoria to Joe and Mathilda (Kuhn) Hammerschmidt.

He married Nora J. (Rohr) Hammerschmidt on May 12, 1956, in Hays.

Survivors include his wife, Plainville; two sons, Gene Hammerschmidt, Phoenix, and Ernie Hammerschmidt Jr., Plainville; two daughters, Cheryl Seirer and husband, Kent, Russell, and Lenee Horting and husband, Ty, Plainville; three brothers, Leon Hammerschmidt, Bill Hammerschmidt and Tom Hammerschmidt; five sisters, Alice Arnold, Elaine Sunley, Mary Hammersmith, JoAnn Jacobs and Theresa Conboy; four grandchildren, Julie Markel, Karen Seirer, Mykeltie and Brylee Horting; and

a great-grandchild, Kenna Markel.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marchelle Hammerschmidt; and a son, Roger Hammerschmidt.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Plainville; burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Plainville.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, Plainville, and from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church.

A Ladies Guild vigil will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic School in care of the funeral home.
