Ervin Eugene 'Blackie' Koerner

Ervin Eugene “Blackie” Koerner, 84, Ness City, died Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born June 11, 1929, in Hays to Alex P. and Evelyn (Bieker) Koerner. He was a 1948 graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy, Hays.

He married Helen Haas on May 12, 1949, in Hays. He was a farmer and stockman. Even after retirement, he considered himself a farmer through and through.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ness City, and Knights of Columbus, Third Degree.

He was an avid athlete, competing in any sport he could find, especially football, basketball, track and boxing.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years; four sons, Larry Koerner and wife, Kathy, Crete, Neb., Dennis Koerner and wife, Karen, Garden City, Kenneth Koerner, Ness City, and Greg Koerner, Dodge City; seven daughters, Barbara Bieker and husband, Larry, Dorothy Stieben and Mary Ellen Stoecklein and husband, Eldon, all of Hays, Donna Metzker and husband, Rob, Ness City, Karen Casey and husband, Jerry, Plainville, Laura House and husband, Kevin, El Dorado, and Janice Showalter and husband, Adam, Alexander; a sister, Betty Staab, Plainville; 39 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Koerner; and a son-in-law, LaVerne Stieben.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ness City; burial will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

A rosary/vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church; Sacred Heart School, Ness City; or Thomas More Prep-Marian High School, Hays.
