Esther Fredericka Kraus, 89, Hays, died Monday, April 14, 2014, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 6, 1925, in Almena to Albert F. and Bertha M. (Ebel) Hueftle. She received a bachelor's degree in political science and sociology and a master's degree in political science from Fort Hays State University.

She married John Wesley Kraus on June 8, 1947, in Oakley. He preceded her in death Dec. 26, 2003. She was a teacher of government classes for many years at Hays High School, retiring in 1990. She formerly taught at Girls Industrial School in Beloit, was active with We the People, and sponsored many student trips to Washington. She was a strong advocate of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, loved American history and enjoyed to travel, both in the country and abroad.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hays, the PEO, the Hays Book Club and the Ellis County Historical Society. She was a volunteer at Community Assistance Center.

She enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, cooking, gardening and was an avid reader.

Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca G. Meis and husband, Ray, Overland Park, and Rachel D. Johnson and husband, Curtis, Grand Junction, Colo.; three sisters, Ruth Lowenthal, Lawrence, Alberta Ahrens and husband, Jim, Oakley, and Katherine Wilgers and husband, Larry, Winfield; a sister-in-law, Pat Hueftle, Hoxie; four grandchildren, Seth John-Thomas Nulton and wife, Nicole, Highlands Ranch, Colo., Beau Ryan Nulton, Roanoke, Va., Albert Paul Kraus and wife, Rachel, Hays, and Ellen Marie Bryant and husband, Dylan, Yuba City, Calif.; and a great-grandson, Nash Carter Nulton, Highlands Ranch, Colo.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Dana A. Kraus and John Carl "Johnny" Kraus; and a brother, Mark D. Hueftle.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Hays; burial in Mount Allen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, and from 1 p.m. until time of service Thursday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Hays Good Samaritan Society Nursing Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
