Eugene J. Schmidt, 91, lifetime Ellis County resident, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at Anthony Community Care Center, Anthony.

He was born June 24, 1921, in Pfeifer to Joseph and Mary (Appelhans) Schmidt.

He married Mary Herman on Aug. 26, 1941, in Liebenthal. She preceded him in death Jan. 6, 2007. He was a farmer early in his lifetime and later worked for the Hays Flour Mill, Fort Hays Lincoln Mercury and Fort Hays Kansas State College.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include three sons, Gary Schmidt and wife, Firma, Fort Collins, Colo., Lonnie Schmidt and wife, Judy, Woodland Park, Colo., and Ernie Schmidt and wife, Jeanette, Cummings, Ga.; a daughter, Sandra Prickett and husband, Brick, Anthony; six grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers; and two sisters.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday, both at the funeral home

The Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, followed by a vigil at 6 p.m, both at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Anthony Community Center, Anthony, Holy Cross Charities, Pfeifer, or Masses in care of the funeral home.
