Eugene Joseph 'Gene' Karlin

Eugene Joseph "Gene" Karlin, 80, Hays, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Hays Medical Center.
He was born March 1, 1934, in Catharine to Frank A. and Elizabeth (Schueler) Karlin.
He married Thelma Rose Dreher on April 7, 1956, in Schoenchen. She preceded him in death Nov. 2, 2010. He had a lifelong career in the oilfield and was co-owner of L-K Wireline & Acid Inc. from 1972 until he retired in 2000. He continued to work independently in the oilfield until his death. He was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran from 1953 to 1959.
He was a devoted husband, father of six children, 18 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Erika Scoby and husband, Luke, Hays; grandson, Matthew Karlin and wife, Rebecca, Great Bend; son, Brian Karlin and wife, Gale, Hays, and their children, Trent, Amanda, Dalton, and Paige; son, Tom Karlin and wife, Robyn, Atlanta, and their children, Derek, Gabe, Jon, and Kaleigh; daughter, Kathy Boggs and husband, Steve, Shoenchen, and their children, Sara Branham and husband, Carlos, Houston and Lacy, Hays, daughter, Carol Fieler and husband, Keith, Schoenchen, and their children, Jade and Justin Herl, Victoria, Chelsea and fiancÃ©, Trent Mauler, Great Bend, and Heidi, Hays, daughter, Brenda Thomas and husband Brett, Houston, and their children, Zach, Haley, and McKenzie; six great-grandchildren, Addison Karlin, Alyson Herl, Graycee Herl, Kyndall Branham, Layla Scoby, and Brady Karlin; and two sisters, Agnes Sanders, Great Bend and Betty Burchfield, Lewisville, Texas.
He was preceded in death by a son, Alan Karlin; his parents; seven brothers, Martin, Eldon, Joseph, Robert, Francis, George and Ervin Karlin; and a sister, Bertilla Wilson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.
A vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church or Thomas More Prep-Marian High School, in care of the funeral home.
