Fern Colton, 84, Hays, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, at Via Christi-St. Francis Medical Center, Wichita.

She was born Nov. 8, 1927, in Brewster to Jess W. and Germaine (Richard) Jacobs.

She married Charles R. Colton on Nov. 28, 1947, in Colby. He preceded her in death Jan. 11, 2011. She was a teacher and very educated, working many years with special-education students.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Altar Society Christian Mothers, Daughters of Isabella, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Retired Teachers Association and the FHSU Alumni Association.

She dedicated her life to teaching and working with students to improve their skills.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Sylvester, Wichita; a brother, John Jacobs and wife, Rosalie, Colby; two sisters, Madeline Gravener and husband, Charles, Colby, and Jessie Enfield and husband, Bud, Goodland; four grandchildren, Nicole McClain and husband, Brandon, Andrea Fleener, Kyle Sylvester and Christopher Sylvester; and a great-granddaughter, Maya McClain.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald, in 1989.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine.

A combined Altar Society Christian Mothers/Daughters of Isabella/VFW Auxiliary rosary service will be at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by a vigil at 5:30 p.m., both at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Oncology Department at Hays Medical Center in care of the funeral home.
