Frederick M. “Fred” Beal, 96, Hays, died Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Via Christi Village, Hays.
He was born June 24, 1917, in Independence to Fred E. and Jessie M. (Kumler) Beal. He was a graduate of Independence High School, attended college in Independence and at the University of Kansas, and received his petroleum engineering degree from the University of Tulsa in 1941.
He married Uneeta Stow in 1942 in Tulsa, Okla. She preceded in death Nov. of 1987. He later married Vera Reynolds in October 1988.
He spent five years working for Boeing Airplane Company during World War II and had a 33.5 year career with Exxon Corp. as a petroleum engineer, retiring in 1979. 
He was active in his church, singing in church choirs, helping with church Sunday School classes, serving on church boards, and volunteering for many church projects. After retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, personal computers and working in his yard.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hays.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two daughters, Anita (Beal) Lange and husband, Kenneth, Santa Rosa, Calif., and Joanne (Beal) Steeples and husband, David, Hays; a son, Frederick M. “Rick” Beal Jr. and wife, Joni, LaQuinta, Calif.; a step-daughter, Karen (Reynolds) Murphy and husband, Stephen, Rantoul, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Steve Lange, Brian Lange, Ryan Beal, Layne Beal, Stephanie Beal, Brandon Beal, Shelly Gruenbacher, Shannon Hassler, and Stacey Anstaett; and 16 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Roberta Walts in 1975.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine; burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of Hays Medical Center, in care of the funeral home.
