Gerald 'Gerry' Lee Mermis

Gerald "Gerry" Lee Mermis, 67, Olathe, formerly of Hays, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at his home.

He was born Aug. 26, 1946, in Hays to Frank and Bernadine (Leiker) Mermis.

He married Rose Mary (Dinkel) Mermis on July 4, 1964. They made their home in Hays, where he worked as a floor-covering mechanic. In 1987, they moved their family to Olathe, where he worked as a warehouseman for SYSCO until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Olathe.

He enjoyed woodworking and appreciated the value of antiques and undiscovered treasure.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Christopher Mermis and wife, Rayleen, and Clint Mermis and wife, Laura; three daughters, Tracy Walters and husband, Mike, Maria Ness and husband, Rusty, and Heather Anderson and husband, Jon; two brothers, Frank Mermis and William Mermis; two sisters, Delores Hoffman and Alice Herman; and 12 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Rachel, Madison, Haley, Jackson, Zack, Abby, Michael, Genevieve, Joseph, Erin and Megan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Cecil and Vernon Mermis; and three sisters, Lilian Arnold, Mary Ellen Schmidt and Betty Leiker.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Catholic Church, Olathe.

A Recitation of the Rosary with scripture will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Olathe Chapel, with visitation following from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Kansas City, Kan., or Kansas City Hospice in care of the funeral home.
