Mildred "Mickey" Irene Haselhorst, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, in Hays.

She was born Nov. 17, 1924, in Russell to John Jacob and Maria Magdalena Streck (née Berschauer). She was a 1942 graduate of Russell High School.

She married Marion Sterling Cann in 1944. She later married Vern Haselhorst in 1966. After traveling with Vern to various working locations including Anchorage, Alaska, and Corpus Christi, Texas, they settled in Great Bend. She practiced as a licensed practical nurse in Hays for many years. She was known in the hospital neonatal unit as the loving nurse who could calm any baby with her famous blanket wrap.

She enjoyed being a spectator of sports and politics, loved working crossword puzzles, and enjoyed visiting with friends and family. She retired and lived in Hays until her death.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Michael Cann, La Canada, Calif.; a brother, Dr. John Streck, Hays; a sister, Lillian Craig, Hays; two grandsons, Michael S. Cann Jr., San Francisco, and John David Cann, Brooklyn, N.Y; a great-granddaughter, Siya Marie Cann, Brooklyn; and a host of friends and other family members.

She was preceded in death by her cocker spaniel, Elmo.

Private family graveside services were Aug. 31 in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Russell.

Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, is in charge of arrangements.
