Hedwig Marie “Hedy” Allen, 92, Hays, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at Hays Good Samaritan Center.

She was born Oct. 15, 1920, in Catharine to Philip and Rosa (Karlin) Leikam.

She was a retired employee of Al’s Chickenette, where she worked for more than 30 years, and ironed countless shirts, cleaned many an office and raised five children.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Secular Franciscans Third Order, both of Hays.

Survivors include two sons, Stan and wife, Karen, Hays, and Robert and wife, Sam, Colonial Heights, Va.; two daughters, RosaLee Mewhinney and Jacqueline “Jackie” Hertel, both of Hays; 19 grandchildren, Corey Allen, Ashley Allen, Sharity Allen, Anthony Mewhinney, Brian Mewhinney, Jonathan Mewhinney, April Burd, Darin Mewhinney, Jennifer Sanders, Lisa Allen, Laura Allen, Lynn Allen, Brenna McComas, Frederick Hertel, Patrick Hertel, Steven Hertel, Matthew Hertel and Jennifer Allen; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Celestine Leikam, Constantine Leikam, Leopold Leikam and Constantine “Connie” Leikam; five sisters, Hildegard Leikam, Wilhelmina Leikam, Irene Leikam, Sophia Frederick and Adelinda “Linda” Bollig; a son, Gerald Philip Allen; and a grandson, Curtis Hertel.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Catherine Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine.

A Secular Franciscan Third Order rosary will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

A vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Cemetery Fund or Good Samaritan Society of Hays in care of the funeral home.
