Helene J. Powers, 83, Hays, died Monday, March 10, 2014, at Hays Good Samaritan Society.

She was born Feb. 15, 1931, in Trenton, Texas, to Griffin D. and Myrtle M. (Dixon) Collins.

She married William Blain Powers on Dec. 25, 1949, in Trenton. He preceded her in death Sept. 2, 1990. She was a housewife, mother and a periodical distributor.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hays.

She was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, enjoyed watching the news, playing video games, baking peanut-butter cookies, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Wilma Powers and Elinda Mages and husband, T.J., all of Hays; a son, Chris Powers and wife, Kasey, Knoxville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Angela McDonald, Dandridge, Tenn., Tiffany DeWitt, Heather Sullivan and Rodney Bauer, all of Hays, and Ellen Powers, Knoxville; and five great-grandchildren, Delia Donovan-Powers, Tiffany McDonald, Abbie Reed, Samara DeWitt and Dexter Sullivan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and four sisters.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Messiah Lutheran Church, Hays; burial in Fort Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, and from 1 p.m. until time of service Thursday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Humane Society of the High Plains or to Messiah Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.
