Howard B. Peters, 65, Olathe, formerly of Hays, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at University of Kansas Hospital.

He was born Dec. 6, 1946, in Carroll, Iowa, to Alvie and Helen (Schroeder) Peters.

He married Kristen Lindsten on Dec. 26, 2004, in Las Vegas. He was a longtime business owner and consultant in Hays. He served as a professor in the communication and business departments at Fort Hays State University and had a passion for teaching. He also enjoyed more than 30 years as a coach and league director for Kids Federated Football.

Survivors include his wife, Olathe; a daughter, Steph Niernberger and husband, Mike, Hays; five sons, Chuck Peters and wife, Robyn, Lindsborg, Dan Peters and wife, Tammy, Olathe, Nick Peters and wife, Karen, Highlands Ranch, Colo., and PJ Peters and wife, Jessica, and Jason Peters and wife, Ashley, all of Olathe; a sister, Margene Nickel and husband, Bill, Woodward, Iowa; and 20 grandchildren, Jordan, Sydney and Peyton Niernberger, Andrew, Belle, Noelle, Breanne and Bridget Peters, Leighton, Dylan and Brooke Peters, Alek, Erik and Calli Peters, Skylar, Jace and Nash Peters, and Emmitt, Melia and Nolan Peters.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church of Hays; private family inurnment will be at a later date.

Family will greet friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at the church.

Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to Hays Football Association or Hays Medical Center Foundation (designate DeBakey Heart Institute in the memo) in care of the funeral home.
