John R. Eland, 78, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2013.

He was born Oct. 7, 1935, in Garden City to P.N. and Dorothy (Springer) Eland. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's degree in 1957 and a juris doctorate degree in 1959.

He married Carolyn (King) Eland on Aug. 17, 1957. He retired after practicing law 42 years in Hoxie, and he enjoyed retirement years in Cuchara, Colo., until moving to Salina.

He was a member of KU's winning debate team and the moot court team at KU Law School. He served as Sheridan County attorney, the Hoxie City attorney, and was a member of the Sheridan County Library Board for many years. He was a member of Hoxie Elks Lodge and Hoxie Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Ken Eland and wife, Jessica, Hoxie, David Eland and wife, Allene, Lenexa, and Tod Eland and wife, Tracy, Salina; a daughter, Kay Heikes and husband, Joe, Olathe; and 12 grandchildren, Brad (Laura) and Pat Eland, Korab, Cherys, Noah and Noelle Eland, Sawyer and Brielle Eland, and Wyatt, Josiah, Cade and Lulit Heikes.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Hoxie Presbyterian Church; additional services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cuchara Chapel, Cuchara, Colo.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials are suggested to Bonnie Cameron at the Living Room LLC in Hoxie to support the performing arts, or the La Veta Public Library, La Veta, Colo., in care of Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, P.O. Box 987, Hoxie, KS 67740.
