LaVerne Henry "Vern" Weigel, 80, Hays, died Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 1, 1933, in Emmeram to Henry and Mary (Merklinger) Weigel.

He married Viola "Olie" Kreutzer on July 20, 1954, in Hays. She preceded him in death. He worked construction at Hays Development Construction and then at Fort Hays State University as the physical plant supervisor until retiring in 1999.

He was a Third Degree member of Knights of Columbus, a member of Sons of the American Legion and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Survivors include three sons, Jay Weigel and friend, Deb McClure, Duane Weigel and wife, Cindy, and Roger Weigel and wife, Ramona, all of Hays; two daughters, Coy Wasinger, Victoria, and Marla Weigel and friend, Vaughn McMurtrie, Hays; a brother, Virgel Weigel and wife, Pat, Hays; a sister, Juanita Augustine, Hays; eight grandchildren, Brandon, Alan and Christina Weigel, Falynn Wasinger, Traci Wright and husband, Aaron, Casey Pletcher, and Raeleann and Rylan Weigel; three step-grandchildren, Janae Atkerson and husband, Craig, Brandy Dreiling, and Heidi Uhrich; a great-granddaughter, Taylor Huffman; a great-grandson, Dylan Wright; and two step-great-grandchildren, Rylee and Reanna Atkerson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Viola Rohn and husband, Bill; and brother-in-law, Frank Augustine.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church; private family inurnment will be St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Hays Senior Center, Meal Site or DeBakey Heart Institute in care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.
