LeRoy Herrman, 78, Xenia, Ohio, died Monday, March 3, 2014, in Dayton, Ohio.
He was born Sept. 29, 1935, in Liebenthal to Raymond and Lucy (Steckline) Herrman. He was a 1954 graduate of Hays High School.
He married Donna (Newport) on May 13, 1971, in Fort Wayne Beach, Fla. He lived the last seven years in Ohio, moving from Wichita.
He enjoyed flying since childhood and flew for more than 40 years. He served as a Air Force fighter pilot serving in the Vietnam era and logging many combat missions. He flew the F-86, F-100, F-105, F-4 and A-7. After retiring from the Air Force, he started a second career in civilian aviation as a demo pilot for Cessna Aircraft, flying many different aircrafts, including the Cessna Citation.
He was a member of the Red River Valley Fighters Pilot Association, the Super Sabre Society and St. Luke Catholic Church in Beavercreek, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Herrman, of the home; two sons, Michael J. Herman and wife, Michelle, Cincinnati, and Matthew C. Herrman and wife, Lorie, Blue Springs, Mo.; a daughter, Susan Jozwiak and husband, Steve, Oglesby, Ill.; two brothers, Raymond J. Herrman and wife, Katie, Russell, and Vernon Herrman and wife, Dorothy, Hays; a sister, LuElla Bieker and husband, Clarence, Hays; and seven grandchildren, Hayley, Ellen and Joseph Jozwiak, James and Joshua Herrman and Clair and Grace Herrman.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; inurnment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, with military honors by Hays VFW Post No. 9076.
Family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
